A photographic research on Anti Terror Architecture

Anti-terror barriers are monuments. They can be found in the heart of any western city center where they remind us of the wars and conflicts we are part of in the rest of the world. Often they are put in place after terror attacks have happened. They are meant to be as inconspicuous as possible but we can always recognize them at what they are. They are camouflaged in all sorts of different ways, sometimes sculptural or flower but pots but sometimes it's just the same concrete block that secures the border of a country.

A photographic research on the colonial heritage of western fascination for tropical plants

Monstera, Fiddle Leaf and Pilea are the stalky stars on social media and their owners call themselves »Plantfluencer«. The love for plants represents environmentally awareness and mindfulness. The paradox is that the modern »Urban Jungle« is part of a colonial tradition where exploitation and shipping brought tropical plants into the luxury city apartments of the 19th century bourgeoisie. #planthunter #urbanjungle

Sanatorium

Stefano Dealessandri, 2021
HD video, interactive animation

During the Renaissance, the newly found Greco-Roman statues were polished and cleaned in such a way that in the end none of the original chromatic traces was be seen. Taking as examle the Apollo del Belvedere, the art historian and archaeologist Johann Joachim Wickelmann promoted a new artistic canon in which “ein schöner Körper umso schöner wird, je weißer er ist" (the whiter it is, the more beautiful a body gets). The renovation works on the Bismarck memorial become a performative act. You can decide wether or not to take part at the restoration. The granite - from which the memorial is made - is cleaned and polished to the point at which it begins to deform, thin and collapse. The attempt to bring Bismarck’s body back to its original white beauty fails and the memorial becomes a shining and shimmering memento.

Bismarck Falling

Anna Wank, 2021
HD video, 3D animation, found footage, 1:17 min

Bismarck Falling counteracts the myth of the eternity of a monument – it is an attempt to make existing colonial monuments temporary. For this purpose, Hamburg’s two Bismarck statues are deformed, moved and destroyed – therefore become alienated. The recurring element of the sea represents the connection between the continents, the connection to colonization and the transatlantic slave trade. The three-part video is interspersed with footage of toppled monuments from all over the world.

ISO Ongoing

Stephan Kraus, 2021
Sound sculpture, 6:10 min

The still ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the associated contact restrictions are collectively forcing us into isolation. Physical distancing inevitably brings with it social distancing. In addition, a monotonisation of our daily environment is taking place. Our sphere of action is condensed to our own home, rarely Aldi or the park around the corner. We experience the pandemic and its social consequences collectively - and yet each household on its own. ISO ONGOING would like to set up a monument to this extraordinary situation in the form of a sound sculpture, which was assembled from recordings of the surrounding soundscapes of many individual people at their homes. The sculpture roughly retraces the temporal course of the pandemic.

City Pigeons are neglected domesticated animals, which have lost their homes. Pigeons only eat seeds, which are sparse in the city. Therefore every pigeon is starving in search of some food. Pigeons were bred to lay offspring
6-8 times every year independently of their circumstances. Many young chicks die of starvation, get eaten by predators or being abandoned due to weakness or illness. Pigeons deserve more love, feed the Birds!

Pizza Bismarck

Stefano Dealesandri, 2021
HD video, 3Danimation, HD video, 0:40 min

Bismark is the name of a traditional Italian pizza topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella, prosciutto, and sunny-side-up eggs. In 1862, the Prussian Prime Minister Otto Von Bismarck delivered a speech before the budget commission of the Prussian House of Representatives stating it would take "blood and iron" (Blut und Eisen) to effect change. The phrase was mistranslated as "blood and eggs" (Blut und Ei), and Otto got a pizza named after him.

The body is exploited, deformed, used in order to fit into society and the system. Just this year the Act on pregnancy planning has been changed in republic of Poland which leads to protests, fighting for ones own agency of the own body. Therefore it is urgent to challenge traditional thinking and create a new understanding and realities of the body, not only for the ones of human beeings but of all living spezies.

Dimensions

Lorenz Wendt, 2021

Urban intervention, mobile counter memorial.

A new approach to how "monuments", in the future, could be collectively designed. The urban space, provided with columns, designed from various artists and groups. These form a visual accent and hold a sculpture, a monument, or another 3D architecture, which can be called up via a mobile app and experienced in 3-dimensional space. Thus, art and monuments become temporary and can be co-designed and changed based on the political context. The columns serve as a trigger image and as a projection basis for the three-dimensional objects.

Renovationmap.org unites activists for the protection of the architectural heritage. They are young architects, restorers, urbanists and designers. They investigate archives, study the history of abandoned buildings, send information notes to the Ministry of Culture & Co, study open registers, help socially responsible companies to find a building for renovation, which meets the desired parameters.
